News Flash!! ISLE OF BUTE AWARDED LOTTERY FUND GRANT FOR THIS YEAR’S V-DAY 60th ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIONS - Webmaster @ 18:07 GMT

The Isle of Bute has successfully applied for funding for an imaginative programme of events to be held from 22nd to 26th June to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of V-Day. The Lottery Fund has allocated £16 810.00 for Bute’s planned celebrations that include inter alia the production of a book that details Bute’s involvement during the war years, a street party for children, story-telling for school children by professional story-tellers, re-screening of classic wartime movies, a Glenn Miller-type big band dance in the Pavilion, a war-theme bitter-sweet play written specially for the occasion, choir events (including performances by the Phoenix Choir and the Ayrshire Youth Voices), museum and Discovery Centre displays highlighting Bute’s wartime heritage, special thanksgiving ceremonies, proposed visits from Royal Navy vessels, and a special sailing of the paddle steamer Waverley to re-enact the vessel crossings that brought evacuees to Bute at the outbreak of war, etc.

A website dedicated to Bute's war effort, and likewise supported by the Lottery Fund, is presently in development. Its purpose is to communicate Bute's story to as wide an audience as possible, and to facilitate people sharing their wartime experiences and accounts of happenings on Bute. To promote the latter objective, this website offers a Forum facility, and all visitors to the website are encouraged to access the forums, and to participate in the discussions that will take place.
